[ Wonderswan Color & Games ]

The console and games which made Ryo famous. How could you not want to get it? Unfortunately the games and console never made it out of Japan so that means if you want to get your hands on it you either go the online auctions route or import.

Harder to find, but a neat little package for the completist in you, is the Anode Tamer Value Package consisting of the game and an original Wonderswan colored to match the game.

The Wonderswan handheld console looks a bit like the GameBoy Advance. I believe it's slightly smaller though and uses a single AA battery. If you plan to get it, be sure to get the Wonderswan Color or the new Wonderswan Crystal as the newer games are made specifically for the Color version (they will not work on the original console) and both are backwards compatible with the previous games. It comes in several different colors (and some special limited edition versions as well: Gundam, Final Fantasy, etc...).

While there are several more Digimon games made for the console, Ryo stars in six of them (although three [Anode, Cathode and Anode/Cathode: Veedramon version] are basically the exact same game -- think Pokemon Blue, Red and Yellow).

  • Anode Tamer
  • Cathode Tamer
  • Anode/Cathode Tamer: Veedramon Version
  • Tag Tamers
  • D-1 Tamers
  • Brave Tamer

The games themselves are RPGs with game play similar to the Pokemon games -- a lot of walking around and leveling up through turn-based battles.

Since it never made it out of Japan the games are completely in Japanese kana. If you're familiar with RPG type game play you can play by trial and error, though you do lose enjoyment of the storyline itself. I'm not sure how far you can go with this method though. The Veedramon version of Anode/Cathode Tamers is in full english (although the instruction guide is in Chinese -- go figure) complete with names from the American dub (ie: Tai and Matt instead of Taichi and Yamato).
